Doctor Who: 10 Greatest Things The 50th Anniversary Year Gave Us
3. An Adventure In Space And Time
Starring a terrific cast including Jessica Raine, Brian Cox (not the professor) and the wonderful David Bradley plus being written by Mark Gatiss, expectations were high for this very special testament to Doctor Who. Thankfully, it delivered. And for many, this was the 50th anniversary special. 'An Adventure in Space and Time' was a biopic telling the story of the show's early years, from its creation to William Hartnell's, the First Doctor, departure from the show. Referential but rightly willing to tweak historical details for drama, it portrayed Hartnell as a crotchety aging actor who found a new jest for life when he became the Doctor as well as detailing how the bright, young Verity Lambert (Raine) and Warris Hussein (Sacha Dhawan) fought for their vision of the show alongside its creator, the bombastic Sydney Newman. This was an undeniable piece of excellent television drama whose universal themes of growing old and change made it compulsory viewing for anyone, whether you are a Doctor Who fan or not.
