Doctor Who: 10 Ingeniously Tiny Clues To Big Plots

2. Carmen In Asylum Of The Daleks

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcFJTc28soQ "It's me!" the Doctor shouted excitedly when he heard 'Carmen' playing. "On the triangle. I got buried in the mix." But if he really did know the song that well, he would know that the lyrics almost explain explain Oswin's tragic fate. This is like the naming of Professor Lazarus, but so much more subtle. Every time the music plays, we hear the same line repeated: "Prends garde à toi!" In other words, "Beware!" But the song talks mostly of a caged bird, of how love is often unattainable, and how the more you want something, the less you'll find it. It's not only resonant that Oswin's caged inside a Dalek and thus the Doctor can't find her, but the song talks of the Doctor's quest to find modern-day Clara. It's only when he becomes a recluse that he crosses paths with her again, or as the song explains, love surfaces when you least expect it. Unfortunately, the use of Australian dance act Rogue Traders's song 'Voodoo Child' in 'The Sound of Drums' is less subtle. It was used because it contains the line, "So here it comes, the sound of drums."
