Doctor Who: 10 Moments Of Mind-Blowing Unexpected Cruelty From The Doctor

1. "An Unearthly Child"

Perhaps the most mind-blowing and unexpected act of cruelty came in the final moments of the very first episode way back in 1963. Watching, it's easy to imagine the pilot episode ending with the Doctor's reluctantly inviting Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright aboard the TARDIS (which we discover was named by Susan). In fact, it's what we're meant to expect. Instead, the Doctor, out of fear of being discovered, abducts the nosy Ian and Barbara, and refuses to let them leave the TARDIS. In the commotion, he also dismisses the concerns and pleas of Susan, his granddaughter, and flies away to 100,000 B.C. Earth. The kidnapping lasted for several episodes, making room for plenty of animosity between TARDIS crew mates in subsequent sequals (See: The Daleks, The Edge of Destruction). What makes it all the more mind-blowing, though it is now a given, was the discovery that neither Susan nor the Doctor are from the planet Earth. The Doctor's treatment of his first companions definitely surprised us and set the stage for an interesting first few seasons. But let us never forget that the spirit of adventure that would follow came as a result of a hostile kidnapping.

I'm a student at NCSU. Every now and then I watch Doctor Who. Every now and then I write something.
