Doctor Who: 10 Timey-Wimey Episodes (Not Written By Steven Moffat)
2. The Waters Of Mars - Russell T Davies And Phil Ford
Although not an example of particularly complex plotting, the Tenth Doctor's penultimate adventure is perhaps the best exploration of the 'rules' of time travel in the Doctor Who universe, which surely gives it timey-wimey status. Landing on Mars in 2059, The Doctor arrives in a place where he can't save the day - the destruction of Bowie Base One is a fixed point in time. The crew of inquistive, brave human explorers are destined to die on the day the Doctor appears. But how can he resist intervening? Waters of Mars also provides a fascinating glimpse at the strain that time travel puts on the Doctor. Not able to stand by, the Doctor becomes all-self righteous and really rather Master-ful as he declares himself 'Time Lord Victorious' and that the laws of time will 'obey' him. Of course, despite his efforts, the fixed point reasserts itself when Captain Adelaide commits suicide. Yep, that actually happened. I think you'll all agree this isn't a watered-down version of time travel...
