Doctor Who: 12 Steven Moffat Quotes You Might Not Have Heard

11. On How He Writes The Doctor...

What we wouldn't do to spend an hour in the Doctor Who head office, right? It must be incredible to actually see the writing process of the show firsthand, and Doctor Who Confidential rarely talked about the scriptwork. And if Steven Moffat doesn't actually rank himself alongside Shakespeare, what does he think he needs work on? It would be a gloomy Confidential to ask the guy about his pitfalls, but believe it or not, Steven's opened up about his Kryptonites in the past. They never showed that on Confidential though. Just David Tennant prancing around backstage.
"I think self-consciousness cleverness is a perfectly fair accusation to level at me - I'm aware of it as a failing, but I can't seem to fix it. I'm always worried I'm not being interesting enough and it leads me astray - before you know it, the whole thing is in split-screen! And boring!I'm not being cynical, though. I'm honestly never that. Rubbish frequently, but not cynical."

"Complex is probably what I do when I€™m in a hurry. It€™s my default setting and my biggest weakness. But I€™m only starting to realise now, looking back, that ['Blink'] in all immodesty, is a really great episode!"

"I remember I spent about two weeks at the start on about two pages. Couldn't type the words Doctor and TARDIS without having an existential moment!"

"I always think there should be more new stuff than old stuff in Doctor Who. You sit down to plan the series and think "I'm bringing back something new every single story." What's the use? You might as well call this "Doctor Who 2." It'd be a sequel and Doctor Who shouldn't be a sequel. Every year there are new eight-year olds watching it and those new eight year olds saw it at the most important age because they're going to live a lot longer than the rest of you. I want them to have their monsters so that in 40 years time they can grump to their children, "Oh, it's not as good as it used to be. I remember the episode. The very first time we saw the Weeping Angels. I remember the first time we saw that episode." You're not getting lost in nostalgia. You're creating nostalgia."
