Companions rarely die just look at the revived series. Rose was sent to a parallel world, Martha left the Doctor of her own accord, Donna we've covered, and Amy and Rory both lived full, happy lives, after the Doctor. Adric wasn't so lucky. The Fifth Doctor and his companions are being attacked by Cybermen as Adric is trying to stop Captain Briggs's space freighter colliding with the Earth. After Cybermen attack consoles of both ships though, the Doctor can't go to save his companion. There's a poignant look when Adric realises his fate, and the next we see, his ship explodes. The Doctor gazes into the distance, as Tegan and Nyssa weep. The show's theme tune didn't play over the credits either. It was an emotional moment that had repercussions in the show, as the Doctor's failure to save him haunts him. "Adric" was in fact the last word uttered by the Fifth Doctor before he turned in the Sixth.
