Doctor Who: 50 Unanswered Questions

The Ninth Doctor

10. What Caused The Time War?

Christopher Eccleston Doctor Who It has been argued that the 4th Doctor's attempt to either prevent their creation, reduce their aggressiveness or find an exploitable weakness against the Daleks at the instruction of the Time Lords (Genesis of the Daleks) was the first shot in the Time War. From there, the Daleks retaliated with an assassination attempt against the High Council of the Time Lords (Resurrection of the Daleks). Russell T. Davies has referred to the destruction of Skaro by the 7th Doctor in Remembrance of the Daleks is the first official act of the Time War but there are no indications during the remainder of the 7th Doctor's tenure that the Time War had broken out. So what forced hostilities to escalate into open conflict?

9. Which Doctor Used The Moment, Destroying Dalek And Time Lord Alike And Time-Locking The Time War?

Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston Prior to the revelation of the John Hurt Doctor at the conclusion of the Name of The Doctor, fans had argued that either the 8th or 9th Doctor had been the one to pull the trigger that ended the war. Some felt that the 8th Doctor had met his demise prior to the Time War or had regenerated in the early days of the conflict leaving the 9th Doctor to use the Moment and end the war. Now with the SPOILER ALERT unveiling of "The Night of The Doctor," we know that the 8th Doctor was not The Doctor who fought in the Time War. On the BBC sanctioned whoisdoctorwho site mentioned in Rose, a sighting of the 9th Doctor "...wearing some old Edwardian outfit, not a leather jacket," is listed. The witness thought that The Doctor was "a loon" or "drunk" but recalls hearing him say, "They're all gone, I'm the only one left." This gives the impression that 8 became 9, but as we now know, even that were still possible, the 8th Doctor had stopped wearing the Edwardian outfit before taking his final breath. Evidence is mounting that the Hurt Doctor is the one face of the Doctor unworthy to carry the name, but did he act alone and will he somehow be redeemed by the conclusion of "The Day of The Doctor?" We may have an answer on November 23rd!
