Doctor Who: 7 Reasons To Bring Back The Rani

5. A Chance To Explore Her Backstory

Rani Outside TardisBBCIn the Rani's two television adventures, we learn intriguing tidbits that hint she is not your average mad scientist. She was exiled from Gallifrey after her giant mice ate the Time Lord President's cat...before eating part of the President himself. Taking full advantage of this opportunity, she went on to become dictator of the planet Miasmia Goria and take control of the population, performing experiments on them. In fact, her experiments on the population of Miasmia Goria were what led to her presence on Earth in The Mark of the Rani; they left the people unable to sleep, so she collected brain fluid from humans, that was supposed to help these people sleep again (the fact that the humans could no longer sleep didn't really bother her). This is probably the most fascinating backstory ever given to a Doctor Who villain, and it deserves a closer examination. Unlike the Master's directionless wanderings throughout the classic series, the Rani had a specific destination in mind, and it would be fascinating to learn more about the backstory to discover what gave her such determination.
