Doctor Who: 8 Matt Smith Era Problems The New Series Should Improve Upon

6. Include An Arch Nemesis

The Doctor's enemies are just as important to the franchise as his companions are. The Daleks and Cybermen have both been utilised in the past to reflect the darker, unforgiving side to The Doctor. The Master has been the topic of many articles €“ a few written on this website €“ exploring the character's purpose as not only an intellectual rival, but as a device with which to further develop the themes and personality of each regeneration. However, as was discussed in the previous entry, the 11th Doctor's reign was devoid of the chemistry we witnessed between the 10th Doctor and The Master, or even the 9th Doctor and the Daleks. The Silence never seemed to pose too much of a threat to the 11th, and even though the Great Intelligence did momentarily succeed in his plans, his storyline was rushed, and the conclusion was nothing but a plot device to introduce The War Doctor. If there is any aspect that the 12th Doctor should be able to improve upon it's this one, because as far as all photographs and interviews are concerned, this Doctor is going to be an old school, enemy destroying, world saving machine with vengeance in his heart and conflict in his blood. The picture that has been painted so far is one of a Time lord who is going to need armies to hold him back, so just take a moment to imagine a person intelligent or strong enough to pose a threat to this Doctor and his companion. Combine that enemy with Moffat's affection for time-twisting plotlines and you have a series of Doctor Who that not even the show's harshest critics could reject. With all the current rumours concerning the return of The Master, it's possible that it could come to fruition sooner than anyone thinks. That all being said though...
