Doctor Who: 8 Matt Smith Era Problems The New Series Should Improve Upon

3. Recurring Characters/Secondary Companions

The most important action that Moffat ever undertook was the distancing of the 10th and 11th Doctors. David Tennant was one of the most popular Doctors since Tom Baker's portrayal, and Matt Smith having to take over the legacy he left behind was always going to be a large task. Once the fifth series began, any reference to the events and characters of the previous four series were few and far between, and while some fans despised the change in tone, it is most likely responsible for the show's continued success. Even the 50th Anniversary Episode didn't feel like a combination of two worlds, but rather the 10th Doctor entering the 11th's world. Now Peter Capaldi is taking over and Moffat has freedom he never had with Smith - Capaldi is much older than either Tennant or Smith, and has decades of acting experience in film and television. Neither Moffat nor Capaldi have anything to prove to an audience, so there is no reason not bring the worlds of the 9th, 10th and 11th together. The Paternoster Gang have been confirmed to return, and it would be a safe gamble to say that River Song will return, so why not feature some companions or characters from both Eccleston and Tennant's series? We could bridge a few of the years between modern Captain Jack and the Face of Boe, or see the loyal and kind hearted Wilfred spend some time with a Doctor who reflects his aged, ex-soldier identity. Watching Captain Jack attempt to flirt with the physically imposing and aged 12th Doctor, or get put in his place by Madame Vastra after trying to hit up Jenny could produce some of the funniest moments in the show's history.
