Doctor Who: 8 Past Roles Proving Keeley Hawes' Casting Is Awesome

4. Ashes To Ashes (2008-2010)

If, like me, your first encounter with Keeley Hawes was as the time-travelling (or coma-suffering?) DI Alex Drake in Ashes To Ashes, then I would imagine you've been reading through this list waiting for it to surface. So here it is! Hawes plays a 21st century police psychologist who suffers a gunshot to the head and wakes up in 1981. Pretty standard, really. In this Bowie-flavoured sequel to Life On Mars, Hawes had big shoes to fill (literally, if you've seen the 80s costuming) in replacing John Simm, or as you probably know him, the Master, opposite Philip Glenister's infamous DCI Gene Hunt. And fill them she did. Although many feel Ashes To Ashes to be inferior to its predecessor, this is not at all attributed to Hawes' performance as she matches DCI Hunt at every turn, demanding her rightful place as an equal to the three continuing characters from Life On Mars. If Tomb Raider hadn't sealed Hawes' place in the Comic Con culture, Ashes To Ashes surely did. Now all that remains is to see who wins out of a stand off between DI Alex Drake and Malcolm Tucker. My money's on Drake. Any takers?
