Doctor Who: 8 Stories That Would Have Made Wonderful Regeneration Stories

8. "To The Death" Audiodrama

Before the release of "Night of the Doctor," a short prequel to "The Day of the Doctor," the eighth Doctor's regeneration was among the great mysteries of the series revival. Since McGann's onscreen tenure as Doctor lasted for just the length of a dismissible television movie, the eighth Doctor has had more audio dramas than any other, leaving fans some semblance of an idea of what happened to the Doctor after the events of that movie. Seeing as how McGann's Doctor was most celebrated in audio, it would have seemed fitting to regenerate his Doctor in that medium, and the integrity of regeneration might not have been lost either. "To The Death" would have made an amazing regeneration story: riddled with the deaths of three companions, Lucie Miller, Tamzin Drew and Alex Campbell (the Doctor's great-grandson), the drama is undeniably emotional, and the death of the eighth Doctor would only contribute to that atmosphere. This would have taken place before the decision to have John Hurt play a forgotten incarnation of the Doctor, so it's easy to imagine McGann becoming Eccleston and immediately serving justice on the Monk, the drama's main antagonist. Not to mention, other audio dramas were being released around the same time that foreshadowed, in a sense, the Time War - and in fact, much of what we know about the Time War comes from audio dramas. So a regeneration around this time could have led into an explanation as to how the Doctor finally got involved in the war.
