Doctor Who: All Doctors Ranked From Worst To Best

2. The Eleventh Doctor - Matt Smith

Best Episode: The Doctor's Wife - Neil Gaiman's debut episode is superb on every level. Worst Episode: Closing Time - Defeating the cybermen with love? Really? When David Tennant announced he was leaving everyone wondered how he could possibly be bettered. Tennant had brought Doctor Who to a whole other level and had officially been voted the number one Doctor of all time. But then something amazing happened. By the end of the fish custard scene in the opening of Matt Smith's debut episode, many of us begun to think "David who?" In the space of ten minutes we had been introduced to something magical; an alien in a human's body, that played the role like a 900-year old man but looked in his late twenties. That magic never stopped. While many complained over the drawn out story arcs and influence of River Song on the show, no one ever questioned just how amazing Matt Smith's performance was. He captured the child-like quality of Troughton, the energy of Tennant and the darkness of McCoy. Even the less-good episodes became a treat with the Eleventh Doctor in the role. He might have been what Steven Moffat referred to as another "boyfriend Doctor" but he was also his own person, never fully adapting to humanity but loving planet Earth and its people all the same. All the way up to his aging moments in The Time Of The Doctor, Matt Smith stole the show. His story arc was certainly ambitious but he always rose to the occasion. While it was somewhat intentional that it would take a whole series to make the Twelfth Doctor' likeable, it is also telling that it took a long time to get over the wonder that was Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor.
