Doctor Who: Jon Pertwee’s 10 Best Episodes

2. Spearhead From Space

Doctor Who Spearhead From SpaceEpisode: Season 7,episode 1 Companions: Liz Shaw, The Brigadier An absolutely amazing debut for the Third Doctor, Spearhead shows my favorite ever scene of Doctor Who €“ as shown in the picture above. It's an absolutely normal morning on Ealing Broadway until the shop window dummies wake up and begin ruthlessly gunning down anyone in sight. Heightened by a magnificent musical score, this scene fulfills Doctor Who's memorable scenes quota superbly, take something ordinary and making it terrifying. It's been tried many times since €“ including a direct copy in 2005's NuWho debut Rose €“ but never quite as well as this. The Third Doctor gets a great introduction despite being stuck in a hospital bed for the first episode (which also for the first time reveals his two hearts), stealing a wonderful leather jacket and car to becomes the dashing hero we will see throughout his tenure. Also, he almost immediately yet has some lovely little scenes of genius or charm with Liz, who is herself a great addition €“ somebody as clever as the Doctor whose opening interview with the Brigadier made for an absolutely cracking scene. This story is also unique as it's the only one to be totally shot in film for classic Doctor Who, which made its recent Blu-ray transfer possible. This makes it one of the best looking stories of Classic Who €“ the colors and interiors look gorgeous compared to the usually unforgiving harsh environment of the studio cameras. Finally, the monster of the week (the Autons) are worthy of mention €“ they're easily one of the best and most bonkers ideas in the history of the show, and elevate this story to true greatness.
