Doctor Who: Ranking Debut Doctor Stories From Worst To Best

6. Rose - The Ninth Doctor

€œRun€. And that was it. My 13 year old self has never recovered from that single syllable so beautifully and rightfully uttered by the wonderful Christopher Eccleston. I wasn€™t watching on the 3rd of December 1989 when Classic Who ended, but I€™d heard enough from my mother about €œthe sexy man in the scarf€ to be interested. And the 26th of March 2005 saw the long awaited return of everyone€™s favourite Timelord. But wait€ He€™s wearing normal clothes? He€™s got hardly any hair? He€™s northern? Well lots of planets have a north, and lots of doubters were silenced when Doctor Who came back, and it was serious thanks to Russell €œThe T€œ Davies. As the name of the episode suggests, this episode was about the introduction of Rose, as much as it was re-establishing The Doctor. The story features the Nestene Intelligence for the first time since 1971, the beautiful €œthat€™s who I am€ speech, and the return of the big blue box that can apparently repel the assembled hordes of Genghis Kahn. Who knew. This story also features the kick-starting of the mythos that would shadow Doctor Who for the next 8 years: The Time War. A fairly decent romp, with lots of unseen PG death, and the first real introduction of a companions family since The Keeper of Traken (you€˜re welcome). There are some downsides however. The story is lacklustre and the Autons are criminally reduced to benign drones without menace or the creepiness that they because famous for in the early 70€™s. On the whole, the episode is rather dodgy, but It€™s with a hint of nostalgia that I say, isn€™t it just fantastic?
