Towards the end of Classic Who, you can start to see the embryo of what the show would become 16 years later. The storylines became more emotionally-charged and intricate, characters were better developed and even some of Moffat's signature timey-wimey antics started getting into the mix. The final companion in the classic series, Ace, is often described as a template for Rose though your opinion on that may vary. The sudden firing of Colin Baker and the slightly-less surprising cancellation of the show meant that both Doctors ended their eras with tantalising plot threads that remain unresolved to this day. The question of how the Sixth Doctor met Mel, who foreshadowed River Song by initially encountering the Doctor out of sequence, could be addressed. The Seventh Doctor being recognised as Merlin (to his own bewilderment) and finding paradox-teasing notes to guide his earlier self is a story that would suit Steven Moffat to the ground. The Cartmel Masterplan, which was an attempt to reinvigorate the mystery of the Doctor cut short by the show's cancellation, could be given a new payoff. The final fate of fan-favourite (try saying that three times fast) companion Ace was never explored onscreen, though there were very clear hints that the Doctor had been surreptitiously training her up for something. Again, later spin-off media such as the novels and audiobooks have tackled many of these question marks but there was a lot of them, just on Sly McCoy's pullover alone. So why not use the opportunity to settle some fan-debates by making something canonical. Televised continuity is by no means sacred, but it's certainly a benchmark for many fans. A high-point could see the Seventh Doctor revisit Ace - and not just because it would be an opportunity to bring back the lovely Sophie Aldred - so that the character's story arc is finally given definitive closure. Her fate(s) have been detailed several often-contradictory times elsewhere, but this would be a chance to bookend the classic series run by settling the final companion once and for all.
