Doctor Who: 10 Actors Who Should Replace Peter Capaldi

1. Olivia Colman

Why She'd Be Great

No matter what role Olivia Colman is given, she always seems to completely nail it. She's firmly recognised now as one of Britain's best TV talents, with BAFTA and Golden Globe wins for her work in diverse fare such as Twenty Twelve, Broadchurch, and The Night Manager.

Colman is capable of giving a performance of emotional devastation, but could just as easily have you falling about laughing. There's also an oddball quality to her, something that she could amplify and perfect for the role of the Doctor. She'd be weird and fun, but also strong and powerful when necessary.

Chances Of It Happening

It could happen. Again, we'll ignore the fact that she's already appeared in Who, although that does mean she's been willing to appear in the show before, so may do again. She's always incredibly busy, but somehow manages to find time for multiple projects, so there should be a way of fitting this in, especially given the challenge and profile it offers.

Then there's the new showrunner Chris Chibnall. Colman has worked with him on three series of Broadchurch, so you have to assume they know each other well and have a good working relationship. It remains to be seen whether Chibnall would want to bring in people he knows from that show, or - in a big sticking point - if he'd rather distance Who from it.
