Doctor Who: 10 Best First Doctor Stories

5. The Space Museum

Doctor Who William Hartnell First Doctor
BBC

After landing near the titular museum, The Doctor, Vicki, Ian and Barbara decide to explore when they come across themselves and the TARDIS as exhibits. Just as quickly, the exhibits disappear, and the TARDIS crew find themselves in a plot assisting the oppressed Xerons to start a revolution and overthrow the controlling Moroks, all the while hoping that their part in the revolution will prevent them from becoming the exhibits in the Morok's museum.

For a television show that revolves around a time-traveller and his big blue box that can go anywhere in space and time, very few episodes actually feature the concept of time travel outside of the main premise. There are a few notable exceptions to this, including The Space Museum, such as 1983's "Mawdryn Undead", as well as more recently in 2015's "Under The Lake/Before The Flood".

The way in which the four leads try to avert a possible future timeline echoes plot points from Back To The Future, a full 20 years before that film was released. It's this premise, with impressive uses of common sci-fi tropes throughout that make this serial stand out amongst others. With talk of time tracks, potential futures and alternate timelines, The Space Museum has more in common with the complex plots of newer series than it does with most classic series episodes, and still stands as a must-watch serial.

Ultimately, the highlight of this episode is The Doctor amusing himself by hiding in an empty Dalek shell. 55 years later, and it's still iconic.
