8. The Web Of Fear

The hairy horrors were on the rampage, their eyes glowing in the darkness and once again controlled by the Great Intelligence. Newer fans of the series associate the cerebral adversary with carnivorous snowmen and Richard E Grant in a top hat. It's reassuring that the Sixties version of the Intelligence also favoured bizarre methods of invasion. By plunging its characters into the bowels of the metropolis, Doctor Who showed any part of London was up for grabs in its mission to send Brit kids scurrying behind the sofa. As if that wasn't iconic enough, the story introduced the world to one Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart, soon to be Brigadier and, of course, father to Kate.
