Peter Capaldi's incarnation had to deal with errant schoolchildren and elemental forces in this imaginative adventure. Cleverly kitting out a woodland location with urban street signs, the crew succeeded in presenting a London overrun by foliage. And the stakes were further raised by writer Frank Cottrell Boyce, who threw open the gates of London Zoo to bring our heroes within munching distance of tigers. The Twelfth Time Lord's first run was criticized in some quarters for erring on the namby pamby side - lunar thriller Kill The Moon being another case in point. However you'd have to have a heart as cold as an Ice Warrior's ankles not to at least be impressed by the scope and ambition shown here.
