Another exquisite moment for David Tennant comes only two episodes later, at the conclusion of Series 3's finale, Last of the Time Lords. Having decimated the human race, ruled the world as supreme tyrant for a year, and forced humanity to build a fleet of interstellar warships with which he plans to conquer the universe, the Master is finally stopped in his tracks by a single gunshot, courtesy of his wife (it's always the women!). Collapsed on the floor of the UNIT cruiser Valiant, the Master refuses to regenerate, knowing that his death will profoundly wound the Doctor. And then the Master dies in the Doctor's arms. The Doctor sobs at the loss, and so does the audience. Even though the character that just died was an insane mass murderer. The viewers aren't upset because the Master is dead - they're sad because the Doctor is devastated. Tennant's portrayal of the grief-stricken Doctor is flawless, and the story is lifted to the status of an instant classic.
