4. How The Doctor Got His Groove Back
When Pertwee's Doctor awakens from his forced regeneration in
Spearhead from Space, he quickly discovers that he has been dumped onto Earth with a broken TARDIS. Even worse, his memory of how to repair it has been totally wiped. The Doctor spends much of his free time at UNIT headquarters struggling to repair his beloved transport. He is usually interrupted or, as in the case of Jo Grant, has his work accidentally sabotaged with a handy fire extinguisher. Spending time on Earth, after all, is good for the Doctor and forces him to develop a clearer view of how human beings interact. This becomes increasingly useful in his further regenerations. The Doctor, however, does finally earn his freedom; as usually, it is by completing the almost impossible. In
The Three Doctors, the Third Doctor works along side the First and Second Doctors to defeat the crazed and legendary Time Lord, Omega. Omega was the Time Lord and solar engineer who created the supernova used to power the Time Lord civilization. Unfortunately, the explosion of said supernova trapped him in the antimatter universe and slowly drove him insane. The Third Doctor helps deliver the death blow that frees the insane Time Lord, offering peace to the suffering father of Time Lord technology. For this, the Third Doctor is finally granted a pardon from the Time Lords on his home planet. The Doctor is finally freed to once again travel the stars in the TARDIS. However, he mostly chose to stick close to his friends at UNIT due to budget restrictions from the BBC.
