Doctor Who: 10 Best Multi-Part Stories In Nu Who

8. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang

Doctor Who didn’t have much luck with two-part stories during the Matt Smith era of the show. They often felt like Steven Moffat was being too clever for his own good and that he was losing concentration on his own writing; often events set up in the first part are scrapped or downplayed in a wholly different second part.

The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang is a tough story to include here because, despite following on, the tone of each piece is so radically different the episodes can feel a million miles apart.

However both episodes are entertaining, with The Pandorica Opens being the slightly better one. Season 5 is highly regarded amongst Doctor Who fans and it definitely has the best ending of the Matt Smith era. Over the course of the RTD era, the show had become a bit predictable but this time our expectations were to be subverted.

All through season 5 we heard about The Pandorica and the fact it held something terrible inside; the most dangerous creature in the universe. What could it be? A Dalek? A Cyberman? A new enemy we haven’t seen yet? Moffat took us all by surprise however when The Pandorica opened and was completely empty, ready and waiting the creature who was to occupy it; The Doctor himself.
