Doctor Who: 10 Controversial Moments From The Revived Series

10. Let's Kill Hitler

Let's be honest, an episode entitled 'Let's Kill Hitler' was always going to get tongues wagging and in retrospect it was nothing more than a publicity ploy to fuel speculation whilst the Doctor went off to put his feet up during the show's summer hiatus of 2011 - just in case the mid-series finale's climactic revelation that River Song was Amy and Rory's daughter wasn't enough to maintain its off screen momentum. As such, by the time the episode eventually aired in the autumn, it was already caught up amidst its fair share of controversy, especially as a line in its trailer had suggested that not only was our beloved Time Lord going to come face to face the infamous dictator of Germany, he was also going to save his life, too. Rather unsurprisingly, as the man majorly responsible for the outbreak of World War II, this was a premise which didn't go down all that well. Ultimately, Hitler didn't appear in the episode all that much, and rightfully so, too. Actually, his inclusion only served to highlight Mel's psychotic tendencies more than anything - after all, if someone with a thirst for murder was given access to a time machine, Hitler would no doubt be at the top of their hit list. Furthermore, the joke remained on Hitler throughout his brief appearance as his scenes gave fans one of Rory Williams' most memorable moments to date, when he told Hitler to "shut up!' and subsequently locked him in a cupboard. Later in the episode he even got to punch a Nazi, too, so all in all it was a great day for Rory the Roman. (Wait, was he still a Roman by this point? That's a discussion for another day.) Heil Hitler, indeed.
