Doctor Who: 10 Easter Eggs, In-Jokes And References In The Magician's Apprentice

3. All The Young Dudes

The Doctor's second entrance in this episode will surely go down as one of Peter Capaldi's definitive moments in the role - riding a tank while playing an electric guitar. You can't imagine, say, William Hartnell doing that.

Completing his newfound rock star image, the Doctor also plays the crowd and gets them to complete the line "we are all the young... DUDES." This is a name-check of the David Bowie song called, yes, All The Young Dudes. It's the sort of thing you could imagine Peter Capaldi ad-libbing himself, seeing as he was once in a punk rock band with talk show host Craig Ferguson.

Also, it's less clear if this one is intentional but the use of "dude" in the Middle Ages, by a time traveller in a phone box no less, is surely a nod to Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.
