Doctor Who: 10 Great Actors Who Were Completely Wasted

Misusing Ian McKellen? That's a crime.

Ever since Doctor Who returned to our screens in 2005, a good portion of episodes have featured a famous celebrity face in a supporting role.

As the years have rolled by, the BBC has continued to place more and more importance upon these guest actors, often using them as marketing tools to hype up an episode (Nick Frost in Last Christmas), or even an entire series (the "coming soon" reel after the credits in The Woman Who Fell To Earth).

For the most part, these guest appearances turn out great - Lindsay Duncan in The Waters Of Mars, Carey Mulligan in Blink, Toby Jones in Amy's Choice, to name but a few - but not every actor who appears in Doctor Who is exploited to their full potential.

In fact, some of them are completely squandered, whether it's due to a shortage of screen time, a paper-thin character, or a lack of anything important to do in the story.

Whatever the case, each of these actors felt wasted in their roles, and they definitely had the potential to bring so much more to their respective characters and episodes.

10. Tom Ellis (Last Of The Time Lords)

Like a few of the cases on this list, Tom Ellis is an example of an actor whose full potential was only realized in the years after his Doctor Who role. As a result, you can't really blame the show for wasting him - because nobody knew how great he was at the time - but he was wasted nonetheless.

Ellis popped up in the final episode of Series 3 as Thomas Milligan, a fugitive trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world ruled by the Master. The role itself is fine and serves the episode adequately, but considering that Milligan's sole purpose is to assist Martha Jones (and ultimately die for her) he feels like a bit of an empty shell - a character built to serve the plot, rather than a compelling character in his own right.

But what truly makes Ellis feel wasted is the fact that he's now a hugely popular name in fan circles for his superb portrayal of the title character in the TV series Lucifer.

Wicked, charming, and with a playful twinkle in his eye, he's an utter joy to watch, so it's a bit disappointing that his only appearance in Doctor Who was as a bland and forgettable character, when he's clearly capable of much greater things.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
