Doctor Who: 10 Iconic Sixth Doctor Moments Nobody Will Ever Forget

10. The Death Of Azrael

Baker's debut story The Twin Dilemma became known for many things. Aside from the breaking in of a new Doctor, there were the giant slugs, the bird men, a young and baffled-looking Kevin R McNally and, of course, a script wetter than a gumblejack's unmentionables. Powering through it all was a dashing central character, albeit clad in a coat that would make Timmy Mallett weep. Viewers may have been agog at his brusqueness, his cowardice and his sardonic streak, but they also got a bit of a tear at the end of the tale, as the Doctor said goodbye to old Time Lord friend Azrael, who perished helping him battle the fearsome, and above all slimy, adversary Mestor. Those who doubt Baker's capacity as an actor should get this scene watched. Not only is he holding his own against seasoned performer Maurice Denham, he communicates a depth of feeling you rarely saw in 80s Doctor Who. His delivery of "I shall miss you old friend... I will indeed" added a terrific dash of drama to a story which needed all the help it could get. Indeed, Baker revealed years later that his wife thought it amongst his best work when he hosted compilation tribute The Sixth Doctor Years for BBC Video.
