Doctor Who: 10 Lost Stories We Hope Have Been Found

5. The Evil Of The Daleks

wod Looking through the synopses and snippet reviews I couldn€™t find any €˜classics€™ in Troughton€™s first series. I€™m sure there are many moments of greatness in the remainder of Doctor Who series four but unless we get the whole back catalogue, we€™ll probably never know. However, by all accounts, the series did end on a massive high with The Evil Of The Daleks. This seven-parter (of which only the second remains) was designed to see the Daleks off with a bang. And indeed, they wouldn€™t be back for half a decade, making their long awaited return in the Third Doctor series nine opener Day Of The Daleks. By all accounts Evil Of The Daleks is one of the best Dalek stories ever imagined. And it sounds it too. The story lives up to its name. Daleks have appeared in 1867, where they are monitoring the €˜Dalek Factor€™ in humans €“ the impulse to destroy. Their ultimate aim? To install that element in all of humanity in an effort to turn us into killing machines. A battle of wills between the Doctor and the Emperor Dalek as he is transported to Skaro. The Daleks€™ exploitation of the human psyche. The desperation of the central character Edward Waterfield as his daughter Victoria is held hostage by the Daleks, forcing them to work for him. His noble sacrifice, leading to Victoria coming on board as a new companion. The Doctor turning the €˜human factor€™ against the Daleks, apparently destroying them. There appears to be some great stuff at work here. If these episodes were returned, we could finally judge where Evil Of The Daleks measure of the pantheon of Dalek stories. Would it be enough to knock Genesis Of The Daleks off the top spot? Maybe so€
