Doctor Who: 10 Moments In NuWho That Made Us Cry

4. The Waters Of Mars

The Waters of Mars is a unique episode in that it is simultaneously one of the scariest and one of the saddest of all time. The Doctor lands on Bowie Base One, the first human settlement on Mars. He knows that the base is going to be mysteriously destroyed on the day he visits.

Throughout the episode, the crew are infected by a virus called the Flood, which infects the water supply. It only takes one single drop to infect a person. Once infected, the victims turn into horrifying monsters that constantly leak water from their fingers and mouths.

There are so many tear-jerking moments in this episode that deal with the Doctor’s dilemma. He knows he can’t save anybody because it’s a fixed point in time that acts as a hinge for major future events. On the other hand, he struggles with having met these people and can’t bring himself to leave them to die.

The most shocking scene comes when the Doctor rescues Captain Brooke and returns her home after previously telling her she had to die. She is frustrated and walks into her house, where she kills herself so that the future can continue the way it was supposed to after her death.

Simon is a writer, cat dad and presenter of a geeky radio show with his husband. He loves Doctor Who (except 10 who can get in the bin…only joking.) He idolises Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lara Croft and would 100% be a Sith Lord in a galaxy far, far away. He wishes life was like a musical so he’d actually be a good singer.
