Doctor Who: 10 Most Compelling Series 9 Fan Theories

8. Missy Is The New Companion!

The female incarnation of the Master (called "Missy" for some bizarre reason, as if women can't be masters) is set to return; at a minimum, she is in the opening two-part story. In fact, we know that Missy features in a sub-plot where she helps Clara.

But the rumourmongers aren't willing to stop there: they are convinced Missy is back for multiple stories and that actually, she's a new companion for the Doctor!

Well, that's a great idea. It certainly worked very well in the webcast story Scream Of The Shalka, where Derek Jacobi's Master was a companion to Richard E Grant's short-lived Ninth Doctor. (He was the first Ninth Doctor, before Christopher Eccleston came along and usurped that title.)

So, we can all hope that Missy is really taking up a larger ongoing role in the series, at least for a while.

But how likely is it? Sadly, not very. From the trailer, it looks like Missy is only in the opening story and - possibly - could make a return towards the end of the series. But that's very far from being a regular companion, unfortunately. With her aboard the TARDIS, life for the Doctor would certainly have been interesting.

What a shame we won't see that happen - at least, not this year.
