10. Jackie Shows Up With A Bulldozer
Make no mistake. There
is one of the greatest love stories of all time being told in the first two season of the new series. But it's got sod-all to do with Rose Tyler. (I should note that I am not a Rose hater by any means. I just think the 'in love with the Doctor' thing is actually the least interesting thing about her character). Let no one tell you differently- The definitive love story of the Russell T. Davies era - and arguably the whole new series - is Jackie and Pete. What makes me love this story is how non-traditional it is. It isn't your typical dewey-eyed-just-met love story. It's a story told massively out of sequence about two people who have been together long enough to know each others flaws - and they both have some
massive flaws - yet there is never a moment when it isn't perfectly clear why they love each other. So when Rose throws Pete's loss in Jackie's face and drives her away by essentially saying 'I get to go see him and you never will again' you might be forgiven for thinking that Jackie is not coming back. Which makes the moment when she comes around the corner with that bulldozer just about perfect. It's not a moment about Rose. Or The Doctor. Or the Universe. It's a moment about Jackie making a tribute to who the man she loved really was. It's selfless, and it's beautiful, and it gets me every time.
