Doctor Who: 10 Myths And Legends That Should Be Explored

5. Blue Men Of The Minch

It only seems fitting that with a Scottish showrunner and Scottish Doctor at the helm, Doctor Who should make a rare trip north and dig up some more of Scotland€™s rich mythology for the Doctor to come face to face with. And since the Loch Ness Monster was done way back in 1975€™s Terror Of The Zygons, next on the list should be the Blue Men of the Minch. The Blue Men of the Minch are blue humanoid creatures that inhabit the waters of the Minch (a strait in Northwest Scotland), have the power to create storms, and spend their time wrecking ships after chanting poetry at the sailors and challenging them to complete it. A bit like mermaids except they cut out the rigmarole of luring sailors to them and just go straight to their targets instead The wrecking ships scenario is fairly similar to The Sea Devils (1972) but since the Blue Men are fluent in English, there would be a lot of scope for a different kind of story and for them to be three-dimensional antagonists in their own right rather than just puppets manipulated by the Master as the Sea Devils were. And the chanting poetry aspect of the myth has potential as a minor way of building atmosphere since, depending on the content and delivery; it can be pretty creepy like Series 6€™s €œTick Tock Goes The Clock€ nursery rhyme.
