Doctor Who: 10 Reasons Big Finish Is Better Than The TV Series

4. Total Recall

The Classic Series was filled with a multitude of potentially terrifying monsters which were often hampered by the budgets of the day and subsequently never got the chance to really shine. The Big Finish audios have done a great job of reinventing and reintroducing many of these monsters to a modern audience. The Metebelis spiders (Eight Legged Truth and Worldwide Web) have never been so Machiavellian. The Krynoids have never felt so plantlike or as absolutely threatening as they do in Hothouse. But more than just reintroducing these old foes, Big Finish have also given them some unexpected and quite incredible depth. Who would have though that the love story of a Zygon could be so poignant? And before fans start to believe that it€™s all just monsters and villains, there€™s also heartwarming family reunion in Relative Dimensions. How they managed to fit all of this in without alienating new listeners is one of life€™s great mysteries. Even if you have no idea who any of these creatures are, Big Finish take care to properly establish them so that they feel fresh, new and utterly fascinating to the Doctor Who fans with less knowledge of the Classic Series. Not only that, but Big Finish even manage to utilise the Daleks in a way that the TV series hasn't quite achieved since 2005's Dalek, especially when it transpires that they have become pacifists in the brilliant Dark Eyes story, Fugitives. The exterminating pepperpots have never been so terrifying.
