Doctor Who: 10 Reasons Why The Third Doctor Is The Best Ever

4. The Companions

Any discussion of a Doctor must address the companions (come on, it's the law!) and the Third had three who would qualify for any Who Hall of Fame. Jo Grant had the loveliest smile in the history of mankind. Endearingly clumsy and passionately enthusiastic, she was also a dab hand with a locked door. She couldn€™t match the Doctor€™s outfits but couldn't be rivalled in the jewellery department. The Doctor had an obvious paternal affection for her and their farewell scene still brings a lump to the throat. One of the most touching Doctor/Companion relationships of all. Next up was Sarah Jane Smith, perhaps the greatest of all companions. She started off by giving the Doctor what for after a coffee-making remark and was never one to suffer the Doctor€™s occasionally patronising personality. Despite this, they forged a friendship from mutual respect. Sarah Jane had many adventures with later Doctors but her character was born with the Third. Last but not least, it€™s hard to imagine the Doctor having a boss, but Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart is the closest anybody has ever got. The Doctor bridled at this and tested the Brig€™s patience to the limit, but you know that they always had each other€™s back come what may. Like Sarah Jane, the Brig met many other Doctors and the Third wasn€™t even his first. However, it was during Jon Pertwee€™s tenure that the legend of the Brigadier was well and truly born.

Older than some and taller than most. Grey of eye and white of beard. Stephen's book 'Hiding', about a boy who meets a goblin in a local wood, is available to download from the usual places. Think of it as a scavenger hunt.
