Doctor Who: 10 Tear-Jerking Moments Of The Revived Series
4. Friends Close, Enemies Even Closer (Last Of The Time Lords)
The Master's return was a long awaited event for NuWho but seeing him refuse to regenerate at the end of it is a moment that's not only understandable, but really rather saddening, too. The Doctor and the Master have a long complex history but when they started out, they were close friends. The Doctor wants to show the Master that there is more to life than killing, whilst the Master plans to destroy the Doctor in every torturous way possible. In Series 3's epic showdown, the Master is shot down by none other than his human wife. When dying in the Doctor's arms, the Doctor demands that he regenerates, but the Master refuses. Finally he has won the conflict the Doctor does not want to face - losing his greatest friend and his greatest enemy at the same time, making him the last of the Time Lords once more. The Doctor just can't bear it as the Master was, in fact, his responsibility, and he was in that moment responsible for his death, too. It's a hard moment to cope with for all parties.
