Doctor Who: 10 Times The Doctor Faced Consequences For Their Actions

7. Being A Smart-Arse - Midnight

Doctor Who The Waters Of Mars Tenth Doctor
BBC

Midnight is one of those rare episodes where The Doctor loses, badly. This companion-lite episode sees Ten take a tour bus across an inhospitable diamond planet with a bunch of complete strangers. The Doctor’s fellow passengers all seem like nice enough folks, if a little flawed, and they get along well. That is, until one of them is possessed by a malicious, unidentified source (the fact that we still don’t know what this was is a stroke of genius).

As the Midnight Entity begins to mimic the passengers, paranoia and hysteria set in fast, and The Doctor attempts to take control of the situation. Unfortunately, as this is peak vanity-arc Ten, he does so in a rather abrasive way, making a big deal about how he’s the smartest person in the room, and not having the tact to hide how much he is enjoying himself upon discovering a new life form. This does not make him overly popular.

After The Doctor and his new acquaintences make mistake of talking too much, the entity begins to speak in unison with them, before eventually stealing The Doctor’s voice. At this point, having already made himself look suspicious to his fellow passengers, they wrongfully assume that the entity has passed into him, and attempt to throw him out of the airlock. He is fortunately saved at the last minute by the hostess sacrificing herself, but The Doctor was moments from losing his life, permanently, right then and there…

MORAL OF THE STORY: Read the room, for goodness sake.
