Doctor Who: 10 Times The Earth Was Invaded

In their nearly sixty-year bid to conquer the universe, invading Earth hasn't been an unfamiliar concept to the Daleks. Doctor Who's first big invasion story in 1964, The Dalek Invasion of Earth, features some of the show's most iconic images, including Daleks terrorising famous landmarks in an eerie, abandoned London.

Having travelled to Earth from Skaro, the Daleks had subjugated the population and forced them into work camps. Their end goal - tunnel to the centre of the planet, hollow it out and then pilot the Earth across the galaxy as a weapon. The First Doctor and companions managed to send the Daleks packing, but they would return to claim the Earth on many occasions after this.

A notable invasion in the modern series was derailed by the Cybermen who had followed the last remaining Daleks - the Cult of Skaro - through the void. An all-out war between the two superior races raged across London, with the Daleks unleashing more soldiers from a Time Lord prison known as the Genesis Ark.

Managing to send both the Cybermen and the Daleks back into the void, the Tenth Doctor also lost Rose Tyler in the conflict - trapped in the parallel world. She would return, however, during the Daleks' next invasion of Earth. 2008's The Stolen Earth/Journey's End saw a new race of Daleks, under the control of creator Davros, kidnap the Earth in an attempt to create a reality bomb. With this weapon, the Daleks would be able to destroy and reshape all of reality.

Working with Rose and his former companions, the Doctor managed to stop the Daleks and free Earth - piloting it back across the universe in the TARDIS. With the New Year's Day Special looming, we'll just have to wait and see if the Daleks are going to have another go at taking over the Earth...
