Doctor Who: 10 Times The Earth Was Invaded
3. The Cyber Invasions
Since their first appearance in 1966, the Cybermen have frequently attempted to upgrade the Earth. Trying to absorb Earth's energy to save their home planet of Mondas in their first appearance, this would be just one of many failed attempts at domination. Another iconic attempt was in 1968's The Invasion, where the silver giants climbed out of the London sewers and marched down the steps at St. Paul's Cathedral before being stopped by UNIT.
In NuWho, the Cybermen have also tried to enslave a parallel Earth. Mad scientist John Lumic created the Cybermen as the next step in human evolution before unleashing them on his world. These metal warriors, initially defeated by the Tenth Doctor and the Preachers, broke through from their world to ours to give invasion a second chance. Sucked into the void, the Cybermen's next attempt was in Victorian London where they constructed a CyberKing using resources from the period and a workforce of urchin children.
It wasn't until 2014's Dark Water/Death in Heaven did the Cybermen almost succeed with their invasion plans. Working with the Master, now calling herself 'Missy', a new army was constructed from the recently deceased all over the planet. Using a Time Lord matrix to store human minds, Missy uploaded these into graves pollinated with Cyber technology in an attempt to give the Doctor an army to 'save' the universe with.
Only when Danny Pink sacrificed himself to command the Cyber Army, and Missy was seemingly killed, did the invasion end.
