Doctor Who: 10 Unbeatable Doctor/Companion Duos

2. The Second Doctor & Jamie McCrimmon

Jamie may not be a companion who develops much but he and the Second Doctor fit together perfectly and define the latter part of 1960s Doctor Who. Frazer Hines was only hired for The Highlanders but the producers could see his potential and recognised his rapport with lead Patrick Troughton. This was bad news for Michael Craze and Anneke Wills who were soon written out. Their loss, however, was the viewers gain, as Jamie become a loveable creation. The tough Highlander with the heart of gold, full of common sense and humour may not have been the most knowledgeable of the Doctor's friends but never mistake him for being thick. The Doctor has travelled with far fewer males and many have been a mite troublesome, such as Turlough and Adric, or third wheels like Rory, Harry or Mickey Smith. Jamie is none of these, being the Doctor's loyal right hand man. Hines also shares excellent comic timing with Troughton, the pair being very, very funny together. When one pictures the Second Doctor it's usually with Jamie by his side. The Highlander was no one's sap, however, famously telling the Doctor "we're through" when the Doctor manipulated him in The Evil of the Daleks. Rather touchingly, Frazer Hines often provides a brilliant Troughton impersonation for Big Finish whenever the company produces a second Doctor tale.
