Doctor Who: 10 Wise Things We Learnt From Tom Baker's Doctor

4. Humans Aren't Pudding Brains

The Ninth Doctor called humans 'stupid apes' while the current Doctor considers us 'pudding brains'. The Fourth Doctor could lose his patience with humanity and recognise their evils and shortcomings but he never lost his basic love and respect for the human race. It is ironic that while his predecessor was trapped on Earth and was desperate to escape, the Fourth with his freedom restored, chose not to fly off to the Eye of Orion on holiday but to Brighton and Paris. He couldn't wait to show fellow Galifreyan Romana the delights of his second home. This affection extended to mankind in all its forms, the first true defining moment of Baker's reign being his superb speech in The Ark of Space, celebrating man's ingenuity and desire to survive. "What an inventive, invincible species," he stated. "They're survived flood, famine and plague, they're survived cosmic wars and holocausts and now, here they are, out among the stars ready to begin a new life, ready to outsit eternity. They're indomitable... indomitable." Later he claimed that: "It may be irrational of me, but humans are quite my favourite species." Well, the humans love you back.
