Doctor Who: 10 Writers We Want To See Return

9. Helen Raynor

Writer of Series 3’s Dalek two-parter and the return of the Sontarans the following year, Helen Raynor first came to Doctor Who as a script editor for The Unquiet Dead in 2005. But nine years after her work on Series 4, she has yet to make a comeback.

As Raynor was a relatively new figure on British television, she didn’t have the largest amount of experience to bring to her episodes. But in recent years, she has served as head writer and executive producer on Series 4 of ITV’s Mr Selfridge and grown quite a bit as a writer, particularly with Mr Selfridge going to some pretty dark places in its final series.

So it would be interesting to see her write another episode with the benefit of that experience, especially since her Torchwood episodes Ghost Machine and To The Last Man showed a strength towards smaller scale mystery episodes rather than big action pieces.

Since most of Raynor’s more recent experience is in period drama, it would be interesting to see her take on a historical story. Though probably not something involving monsters in the back room of Selfridge’s.
