5. Hugh Grant Is... The Ninth Doctor! (2003)

Hugh Grant Before three actors auditioned for the role of the Ninth Doctor in the revived series, Russell T. Davies admits he approached Hugh Grant with an outright offer. Having already played the role in the 1999 Comic Relief charity special (written by a young Steven Moffat), the part was Grant's for real this time, if he wanted it. Except, he didn't. Later Grant expressed his regret, not realising how well the show would turn out. In turning the offer down flat, he forced Davies to look elsewhere. It was while drawing up a short-list, Davies received an email from Christopher Eccleston, who had recently worked with the writer on The Second Coming, expressing and interest in auditioning for the role, so his name went down on the list of those being considered.
