Doctor Who: 12 Best Twelfth Doctor Episodes

2. World Enough And Time

Doctor Who Peter Capaldi
BBC

“Pain. Pain. Pain.” World Enough and Time brought back the Cybermen at their most disturbing, and served as a terrific origin story for the iconic foe, as the desperate inhabitants of Floor 1056 sacrificed their humanity to make their dreams of Operation Exodus a reality. Steven Moffat’s use of time dilation as a storytelling device made for one of his most ingenious ideas, as Bill was forced to wait ten years for the Doctor after suffering a dreadful injury, watching from below as her friend’s grandstanding cost her more and more of her life.

However, the episode’s greatest achievement was hiding the Master in plain sight as “Mr Razor”. John Simm did an excellent job of making Razor an engaging personality in his own right, as he built a seemingly touching relationship with Bill and helped her to navigate the dreadful world she was trapped in.

His treachery in taking her for conversion initially seemed to be an authentic act of twisted kindness, before being revealed as something far more terrible when Razor encountered Missy, and revealed how much he still loved disguises.

World Enough and Time culminated in an exceptional cliffhanger, as the Doctor realised to his horror that he had arrived too late to save Bill, and was confronted with not one but two incarnations of the Master.
