Doctor Who: 12 Best Twelfth Doctor Episodes

6. The Magician's Apprentice

Doctor Who Peter Capaldi
BBC

The Magician’s Apprentice got Series Nine off to an excellent start, as the Doctor was confronted with a dreadful moral dilemma in the form of a young Davros. The episode only became more epic and intense as the monstrous Colony Sarff sought the Doctor across the universe.

Meanwhile on Earth, Missy returned with a bang, freezing planes in the sky and warning Clara that the Doctor was preparing for his death. Moffat continued to build on the idea of the friendship between the Doctor and Missy, as the renegade Time Lady revealed that she, not Clara, had been given the Doctor’s confession dial.

Things became all the more ominous with the revelation that the Doctor had abandoned the young Davros, and the Time Lord’s decision to surrender to Sarff. The following meeting between the Doctor and Davros didn’t disappoint, as the two revisited their previous confrontations in anticipation of the end.

Davros then displayed the depths of his cruelty, as he was revealed to have brought the Doctor, Clara and Missy to a rebuilt Skaro and revelled in the apparent deaths of the Doctor’s friends. The episode concluded on a shocking cliffhanger, with the Doctor seemingly attempting to murder Davros in his youth to change history and save Clara.
