From grappling with clockwork droids over open doorways from daring the inner workings of a Dalek, the Twelfth Doctor has proven that he certainly isn't short on courage. He faces danger with fire in his eyes and a flare in his nostrils, creating a terrifying spectacle for his foes. This Doctor knows what needs to be done and isn't afraid of being the one to do it. It's rather interesting to see this courageous side of the Doctor in light of his statement in Deep Breath that does not expect to reach the Promised Land (i.e., find Gallifrey). Why is it interesting? Most people can be brave when they have something for which to fight, but the Doctor's brittle acceptance of being cut off from his people forever gives him little motivation. In lieu of fighting for the chance to see Gallifrey again, the Doctor's motivation for courage comes from his companions. They are the only family he has anymore, and he would doing anything in the universe to save them. Such great courage on his part also reveals the depths for which he cares for them.
