Doctor Who: 30 NuWho Characters Who Would've Made Fantastic Full-Time Companions
19. Jackson Lake
Appeared in: The Next Doctor.
Unsurprisingly - given the episode title, and the fact David Tennant announced he was leaving beforehand - there was plenty of speculation as to whether David Morrissey was actually going to be the next Doctor. His character, Jackson Lake, certainly ticked all the Doctor-ish requisites: companion, sonic screwdriver, TARDIS... only for Russell T Davies to comically dispel that buzz:
"Well, er, it makes a noise. That's sonic, isn't it?"
"TARDIS. T A R D I S. It stands for Tethered Aerial Release Developed In Style. Do you see?"
Just as they did in the TV series Blackpool, the two Davids illuminate the screen together, delightfully interchanging between the Doctor/companion roles with fun and effervescent charm. Jackson brilliantly exhibits his inner Rosita (aka Victorian badass) when zapping a couple of Cybermen while wearing a bandolier of infostamps.
Someone who leads a rapturous applause for the Doctor for saving London (drink it in Doctor as history won't remember it), and is able to persuade him to have Christmas dinner, deserves at least one more trip around the TARDIS console room. Given Jackson's priceless reaction first time around, just imagine him on an alien world...
