Doctor Who: 30 NuWho Characters Who Would've Made Fantastic Full-Time Companions
17. Craig Owens
Appeared in: The Lodger, Closing Time.
Strip away the American chat show veneer and you'll discover that James Corden is an accomplished actor, as proven in his tour de force performance as Francis Henshall in the hilarious play One Man, Two Guvnors. Corden brings those better talents of his to the role as the endearing Craig.
Him and Matt Smith strike up (yes, football pun intended) an easygoing chemistry, and his twee romance with Sophie doesn't spill over into mawkishness. It was a nice twist on the old companion-receiving-a-TARDIS-key when Craig handed a set of house keys to the Doctor in The Lodger. In fact, given how schmaltzy this entry has been, it would've been been rather lovely seeing Craig, Sophie and Stormageddon take at least one TARDIS trip.
