Doctor Who: 5 Best & 5 Worst Creature Designs From The Original Series

Worst Creature no. 3: Axon and Krynoid (The Claws of Axos and The Seeds of Doom)

There's so little difference between these two that I might as well clump them both together. Okay, so the Axon was justifiable- sort of. When Axos lost some of his influence the humanoid figures he was projecting began to morph into a more shapeless form, but I've never seen The Seeds of Doom so I don't know if the same can be said for that. Neither of these two are particularly attractive and I can't help thinking that they could both have been improved in some way- let's face it, you couldn't do much worse than something that looks as though it's crawled out of a trash compactor- but you can look at the next few pages and decide that for yourself.

I suppose what annoys me about these two is that they don't have the decency to be really bad; it's as though the designers tried to play it safe by making a shapeless mass trailed with spaghetti. You could even have reused the same costume for these two, and for all I know they did. The recent Doctor Who figures range has produced both of these monsters and used exactly the same mould for each but different colours. Why these have been out for a while but the number of classic companions released can be counted on the fingers of one hand is completely beyond me (going off on a slight tangent here, ahem). But that's not a criticism of the stories themselves, and Axos is one of my favourite Pertwee episodes. As I said before, a bad monster doesn't necessarily mean a bad story, so let's move on to my other number three...
