3. Canton
Busy as he must be ruling over hell in Supernatural, Mark Sheppards two-episode turn as an ex-Secret Service agent circa 1969 made his character a fan favourite and lead to demands for his return for the show. He was a breath of fresh air in a series that was increasingly being made up of two breeds of character sassy heroic dudes who were awkward yet successful with women and sassy sexy ladies whose ability to give birth or have been born were important. We liked that he was an older guy from a separate time, with a mysterious backstory that was hinted at through his two episodes, then made yet more intriguing and tragic with one final, funny at first, line Yes. He is. Canton felt fleshed out and was an instant fit to the TARDIS crew in the short time we knew him. Canton was a staunch soldier, a self-aware parody of the way Americans are often portrayed in the media (that is, trigger happy) something I think we can all get behind. With a serious need for the representation of LGBTQ people in the media, its high time we saw a character so comfortable and confident in his sexuality, despite existing in an era at odds with this behaviour.
