5. It Would Be Keeping Faith With A Promise Nobody Ever Expected To Be Kept
Back when Trial of a Timelord was first being aired, it came to light that The Valeyard was an evil version of the Doctor 'Somewhere between his twelfth and final incarnation'. And we all thought to ourselves 'An evil version of the Doctor is a pretty cool idea.' and then, because we were young and pedantic we thought 'So does this mean that Michael Jayston is going to be hired back once they finally get through the next five-odd Doctors?' (Adorable, the way we assumed that the show would just keep running and never be cancelled, isn't it? Of
course we would eventually get to the Valeyard, the show just has to get there.) Then the whole thing was cancelled in 1989 and we all sort of shrugged and decided that it probably would have been a colossal incomprehensible mess, even if they did remember to do it once they reached the 12th Doctor. (See, we
had learned something from Trial.) By the 2005 resurrection everyone had pretty much either forgotten or abandoned the idea - So it seemed unlikely to ever happen. But... Clearly Stephen Moffat remembers - he threw the name 'Valeyard' into the mix in The Name of the Doctor. To hint at what was to come, to throw a false scent, or just a little fanboy shout out? Well, honestly it was probably the second. Although the "Valeyard' thing totally fits with the 'Not in the Name of the Doctor' stuff... but... Have you ever seen a kid who thinks they've been let down or forgotten, only to have someone come through for them after all, long after they expected them to? Have you ever been that kid? I totally want to be that kid.
